Many European-American mental health professionals still may not think of themselves as racial beings. It is more common for someone of the dominant culture to think of self-awareness in nonracial terms, such as self-esteem or self-concept within the dominant culture as conceived through psychoanalytic, humanistic, or developmental psychology (Baumeister, 2005). It is important that the mental health professionals expand and sometimes depart from monocultural perspectives and begin to see themselves and others in context of culture.

Our multiracial/multiethnic/multicultural competency building (M3CB) model suggests that change will occur if action is taken across four levels: (1) conceptual/theoretical/intellectual, (2) emotional through multicultural dialogue, (3) behavioral engagement, and (4) skill building. This chapter’s contribution to the literature is that our model not only suggests that this change will occur but also offers ideas on how individuals can undertake this change process. Our vision for mental health professionals who pursue growth through our process model is that, as they grow in their individual competency, they might encourage others toward pursuing multicultural competency.

With exposure and skill building, this individual may grow in his/her identity development such that the ego identity function can expand and strengthen to include broader multicultural perspectives. While varying considerably in their level of psychological depth, what both the Howell and the Bennett models imply are both conscious and unconscious processes involved in the resolution of racism and other cultural biases. “The Browning of America” 23 An anchor among multicultural models has been Derald Wing Sue’s multidimensional model for developing cultural competence (Sue and Sue, 2008).
