Example text

The spirit animal don Juan refers to is a "magical deer," a manifestation of the psychopomp or guide who reveals the next step in one's process of individuation. Being alone in the forest is one situation in which powerful unconscious forces may emerge. Being alone, separated from one's environment, friends and routines, is equivalent to being stripped of one's shields against the unconscious. 20 The average man has two choices when the unconscious begins to break through his routine awareness.

In any case, we in an industrialized society need to remain aware of the absence of the value of community, for this is a loss we collectively suffer from. The apprentices of don Juan and don Genaro take up this task of supporting each other and shaping a community when they accept that they must learn to get along with each other. Perhaps in future books by Castaneda we will hear of their attempts to make a place for themselves in the everyday world. The Approach In the accounts of Carlos's experience in don Juan's world, we find a natural process of psychological evolution.

Such dependence on reason may be an unconscious attempt at self-protection, but it ends by becoming a prison. Thus don Juan uses psychotropic plants with Carlos in an effort to shake up his assumptions. The rational point of view allows one to dismiss the seemingly irrational aspects of experience as merely the effects of a drug. In this way the rationalist shields himself from the effects of the unconscious but fails to see the meaning of his experience. To the extent that this process prevails, the experience of the unconscious does not pass from the psychedelic to the psychological.
