If the surfaces are at right angles the gap between the blade and the component should be constant when it is checked with feeler gauges as shown. In addition to try-squares, cylinder squares and prismatic squares may also be used for checking large work. The form of these squares ensures a line contact between them and the work. 18. The DTI is set to zero against a master gauge such as the cylinder square shown in the figure. Any out-of-squareness in the component is shown up as a plus or minus reading on the DTI.

These range from electrically powered chain blocks to overhead gantry cranes capable of lifting massive loads. Pneumatic (compressed air) These are used in mines, oil refineries and chemical plants where there are flammable and explosive vapours. Elec trically power equipment is not suitable under such conditions because of the possibility of sparks from the motor brushgear and from the switchgear controlling the motor. They are limited to rela tively small loads. Hydraulic (pressurized liquids) These may be direct acting using long-stroke pistons and cylin ders, or they may use hydraulic motors to rotate the lifting rope drum.

The movement of heavy loads involves careful planning and the anticipation of potential hazards before they arise. Safety precautions and codes of practice must be strictly observed. 2 Manual handling The manual handling of objects is the cause of more injuries in factories and on site than any other factor. Back strains and injuries are the main causes of absenteeism in industry. Extreme care must be taken when lifting or moving heavy or awkward objects manually. The rules for correctly lifting a load are as follows: (a) Maintain the back straight and upright; bend the knees, and let the strong muscles of the legs and thighs do the work.
