In a history of the “War Class” of 1917, the author noted that Sheen and another student were so genial that they received off-campus invitations to Bourbonnais homes while the other students were forbidden to leave campus on Sunday evenings during Lent. The author of the senior class profile also appreciated Sheen’s perpetually sunny disposition: “he came into our midst in the autumn of 1913 with the fire and enthusiastic optimism of a ray of light.
