Even though the absolute number of communities appears to have declined from an estimated 10,000 or more in the late 1960s and early f 970s to 2,000 or so now, the 1995 Communities Directory describes more than 500 groups in North America. This list could be doubled or tripled easily because it only includes 11 of the 400 Hutterite colonies and none of the numerous Roman Catholic monastic com nities. If interest warrants, America's Communal Utopias may be supplemented eventually by a follow-up volume covering the most recent decades of communal development.
